Ben pounded his head on the bathroom wall in his beachside Black Water home, leaving a rounded indentation in the white drywall.

Life was good, living with his girlfriend Anna in her parents’ rental. That is, until Anna showed him the website. Not only did thoughts of obediently serving this thing who called himself Slenderman, but urges to obey his commands became acceptable. Even Anna began inviting friends over and showing them the video.

Review

“Remember the vampires of Dracula, this book will take you back to that era and give you so much more.

Lately, Vampires have been all the rage, but not the vampires of old, Dracula; they are new, romantic and everyone wants to be with them or be them. Well this is definitely not one of those stories! Ring, by author Connie Myres is more along the lines of the old Dracula style vampires. Which makes it that much more enjoyable to read, its different, unique and a story entirely unto its own.

Cassie is the co-owner of a rare bookstore, she has a steady boyfriend, but it isn’t exciting, it’s comfortable and although she wants a family and marriage, she is getting older every day and her chances of becoming a mom are quickly passing her by, she isn’t sure if she is ready to settle for comfortable. When a charismatic customer with a hand full of rings comes into the bookstore looking for a rare book, Cassie feels drawn to him in ways she doesn’t understand. So much in fact that she says No when Derrick, her comfortable boyfriend asks her to marry him, just so she can explore what this pull is all about. Unfortunately for Cassie this pull isn’t anything that love stories are made of, it has hints of evil and a twisted nature, as she finds out when she stops by his “home” to deliver the book.

Gustav is a vampire, and not just any vampire, he is the leader of this small clan living in Michigan in an ancient castle hidden away on the coast of Lake Michigan. Cassie feels pulled to him, but at the same time repulsed by the some of the other people living with him, although she doesn’t know why. After a bottle of wine, Cassie is forced to spend the night, but she awakens during the night and over hears things not meant for her ears, that enlighten her into what is actually going on, and Cassie loses the attraction and it becomes a fight for survival.

Cassie also has loyal friends, some old and some new. Like the seer that she meets on the drive to Gustav’s, they have only met once yet Kriska is more than willing to fight old demons and memories to help Cassie when the time comes. Then there is Cassie’s business partner and best friend Nicole, who will risk life and limb to get Cassie away from Gustav, even before she knows anything about him. Even Derrick, the comfortable boyfriend shows his true colors when the time comes.

This was not the light-hearted romance story of vampires that has been making the rounds in books lately, this was darker and older, but it was such a good story. There were backstories from side characters that made you feel like this was not just Cassie’s story, but that the tell had been going on for a long time and Cassie was just one player in the whole story. It was well written and kept me engaged the whole way.”

“Now what?” Irma said as they walked back to the SUV.

“Let’s go back to your place and go through what we have so far. Especially that weird website.”

The fog still hung in the air when they arrived at Irma’s.

The minute they walked into Irma’s apartment, the Staffie was prancing about, making it known that he needed to go outside.

“I need to take Mr. Dibble for a walk. I’ll be right back,” Irma said, placing her backpack on the dining table.

Pacie bit into a slice of her morning toast, smothered in the homemade strawberry jam, and sat it back down on the paper plate next to her computer. She wiped her sticky fingers with a napkin and then clicked the button on the screen that sent the kidnapping article that she had finished writing earlier that morning to Irma who would then edit it before posting it to the website and sending it off to the local news, complete with images.

After reviewing my chapters I realized that I skimped on the search efforts for locating the missing child. I found a document called Investigator’s Guide to Missing Child Cases. It’s from 1987 and in the public domain. My story isn’t totally realistic, but I want it to be realistic enough so that the reader can suspend disbelief and “temporarily allow oneself to believe something that isn’t true, especially in order to enjoy a work of fiction.”

Here are a few things I found interesting.

  • The abductor often will return to volunteer to assist in the search in
order to monitor the progress being made on the case.
  • To perform a ground search, the command post should divide the search area
into grids. Each grid will be assigned to a “squad” or team to be searched.
  • Team members should be spaced no more than ten yards apart.
  • Each team member should wear a numbered “Day-GIo” vest or other visible means to
identify him or her as a registered searcher.
  • Relatives should not be permitted to participate in the search but should be
asked to remain at the command post.

I’ll be changing mostly the timing of events and have more mention of the search effort.

It was almost midnight when Christine Jameson parked in her driveway where muted streetlights cast a dull light. She took her wallet from the glove compartment and placed it in her work bag next to a pair of safety glasses, gloves, and a box-cutter. She picked up the grimy bag from the passenger seat and carried it into her Black Water home. The air was sticky outside and even more so on the inside. She sat down on the bench near the door and took off her steel-toe work boots and sweat-soaked socks.

Irma uploaded the video they had taken at the park to YouTube and their website. There they not only posted videos but articles and pictures of the cases they had done. It was a lot of work, but Irma enjoyed maintaining it.

“I wonder if the camera picked up something that I didn’t see.” With her camera still connected to the computer, she scanned through the extra clips until she came to the one where they were in the gully on the trail and Pacie wanted her to zoom in on something. Frame by frame, she began going through it. Then something caught her attention. It was a shadow, a dark black shadow, darker than what surrounded it, near a tree trunk. She heard herself say something stunk.

“Let’s head back,” Pacie said, turning around. “I don’t want to be out here in the dark.”

“Any ideas on who you think it is?”

Pacie shrugged. “No, I don’t.”

“But what about how the kids described him—ten feet tall, no face, and stuff?”

Pacie Rose stood up and groaned as she brushed garden soil from the knees of her jeans. She put her hands on her hips and stretched side to side as she looked up at the cloudless late afternoon azure sky and then back down at the June bearing strawberry patch. “Next year I’m putting everything in raised beds. This bending over and crawling around on my hands and knees is getting old.”
